Interventional Radiology Program Director

Isabel G. Newton, MD, PhD, is a board-certified diagnostic and interventional radiologist at the VA San Diego Healthcare System who performs all types of minimally invasive, image-guided procedures with a focus on interventional oncology for liver cancer. She is an Associate professor at the University of California, San Diego, where she serves as Interventional Radiology Program Director and Co-Program Director for the T32-funded Clinician-Scientist Research Residency Program (CSRRP). Dr. Newton conducts basic and translational research on thermal ablation, cancer stem cells and the immune response. She also serves as Chair and Secretary of the Interventional Iniative and Co-Creator, Contributing Writer and Director of the documentary series, Without a Scalpel.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health in 2013, Dr. Newton was a fellow in VIR at UCSD, where she also completed residency as part of the CSRRP. She earned her MD and PhD from Wake Forest School of Medicine. She graduated from Princeton University with a B.A. in Molecular Biology.
