Mary Ramirez, MA, CIP, is the Assistant Director of the Health Sciences and Behavioral Sciences IRB (IRB-HSBS) at the University of Michigan. Prior to assuming the Assistant Director role in 2013, Mary was the Full Board Administrator at IRB-HSBS for 6 years. In addition to overseeing daily and full board operations, staff supervision and development, and quality assurance, Mary serves as the Certificate of Confidentiality (CoC) Coordinator for the U-M Human Research Protections Program (HRPP). In her role as Coordinator, Mary oversees a comprehensive CoC program that includes educational outreach, application review, compliance auditing, and records management. This dual-role affords a unique opportunity to effectively support the social-behavioral and biomedical research community in assessing the need for and obtaining a CoC, at the same time ensuring that the institution is best positioned to meet its obligations under the CoC assurances.
