Kate Gallin Heffernan, JD, is a partner at Verrill Dana LLP and the Chair of its Academic and Clinical Research Group. She advises academic medical centers, universities and other research stakeholders on a comprehensive range of issues affecting biomedical research, including the protection of human subjects, research compliance and misconduct investigations, investigator and institutional conflicts of interest, FDA requirements for clinical trials, the privacy of research subjects’ information, and research related to organ donation and transplantation. Kate’s prior experience advising from both outside and within the institutional setting has given her an appreciation of the hurdles health care organizations face in developing and implementing solutions that work within the complex regulatory scheme in which they pursue their mission. Kate is a frequent speaker and author on many issues related to the legal and ethical issues raised by biomedical research. Prior to joining Verrill Dana, Kate operated her own practice as the founder of KGH Advisors LLC, after having worked in the Research & Technology section of the Office of the General Counsel at Partners HealthCare in Boston, MA. Kate graduated magna cum laude from both New York University School of Law and Georgetown University.
