Dr. Bertolatus received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Johns Hopkins University, followed by training in internal medicine at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY. He completed training in nephrology at the University of Kentucky and the University of Iowa. In 1982 he joined the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa, where he is currently an associate professor emeritusy. He has experience in laboratory and patient centered research, and has been an investigator in a number of clinical trials in kidney disease and kidney transplantation. His main clinical interest was in the care of kidney transplant patients. Since 2000 he has been a co-chair of the UI biomedical IRB, and until recently served as the executive director of the Human Subjects Office. From approximately 2007-2013 he was a member of the Council on Accreditation of AAHRPP, and he re-joined the Council in 2017. He also continues as an AAHRPP accreditation site visitor.
