The federal regulations state that the compensation of subjects must be free from coercion and undue influence. However, it can often be difficult for IRBs to unpack what “appropriate compensation” entails, especially within the realms of traditional vulnerable populations (e.g., minors), non-traditional vulnerable populations (e.g., homeless, undocumented, and college students), and internet-based subjects (e.g., mTurk participants).
