Background : Two distinct pathways for promoting diversity and inclusion within medicine were developed. The first pathway entails a medical education intervention that was developed to teach health professions students, including medical, nursing, and physician associate students, about addressing structural determinants of health both within and outside the clinical setting. The second pathway focuses on storytelling to highlight the experiences of medical providers with bias in medicine and the adverse impact it has on patient care.
Purpose/Objective : Undergraduate and graduate medical education is increasingly recognizing the need to diversify the health care workforce in order to provide equitable health care as well as to elevate marginalized voices within a privileged field. This mission is particularly relevant for emergency providers who work on the front lines caring for clinically and socioeconomically diverse patient populations. Strategies of coalition-building, community engagement, media outreach, needs assessment, and power mapping will be discussed.
Methods : The US Health Justice pilot course consisting of eleven sessions was developed with acceptance of two physician associate students, four nursing students, and sixteen medical students. Pre- and post-questionnaires were completed by students to assess the impact of course on knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Additionally, an online platform called Systemic Disease was created to disseminate narratives about bias in medicine with qualitative research subsequently conducted to assess for trends and potential components of bias-reporting systems.
