There's a ton of headlines in medical and general press about burnout. Emergency medicine tops the list of specialties where physicians are reporting high rates of burnout. But what is behind these scores? How is it measured? And more importantly what can you do about it? What can you expect your health care system to do about it? And what is SAEM doing in this domain? In this short overview attendees will learn simple take home messages about how burnout is measured….why measuring it in this way may not tell the whole story….how burnout is different than overall physician wellness, fulfillment, and engagement….and what the 6 main drivers of burnout are. The presenter is a past president of SAEM and will provide an overview not just of burnout in general, but also what we as a Society are doing and hope to do in the future to address this existential threat to our specialty and our individual career longevity.
