Emergency medical services are much more than transportation to the hospital. The information gathered from the scene and their initial management of patients is a critical part of patient care. “When were they last seen normal? Were there any medications around them? Did you give them anything in route?” The care of your patient starts in this prehospital setting. It affects how you care for them and their outcomes. Emergency physicians should play a larger role in the education of prehospital providers to promote better team based patient care. I will talk about the importance of opening lines of communication between our two services through a cutting edge education module designed for paramedic students. The modules include podcasts, example cases, discussion questions, and protocol frameworks that cover a variety of high yield topics. Emergency physicians and residents created these modules with a focus on what we want paramedics to know. I will discuss how using these resources in a flipped classroom approach to teaching provide learners with a comprehensive and practical understanding of the topics. I will also discuss how we as physicians can use these modules to better understand the abilities and limitations of the paramedics we interact with. Everyone should attend, especially if you have an interest in education and emergency medical services. I took part in the creation of these modules and am looking forward to sharing them with you all.
