Life-Threatening Bleeding in Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department: Indications, Therapy, and Reversal Agents — Day One

THIS IS A SATELLITE SYMPOSIUM
This symposium will describe the indications for anticoagulation, pharmacologic agents and reversal agents in the Emergency Department and ICU and the treatment of patients with severe bleeding, including intracranial and intraspinal bleeding. This is the 1st hour of a 2-hour symposium. This hour includes four (4) ten (10) minute presentations followed by a 20-minute panel discussion and Q & A with attendees. Lunch is provided.

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education is accrediting this 1 hour symposium for 1 (one) hour of Category 1 ACCME credit.

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

• Describe various oral anticoagulants including the vitamin K antagonist warfarin, Factor IIa and Factor Xa inhibitors and their indications for patients with DVT/PE and Atrial fibrillation/Stroke
• Interpret the Severe Bleeding Management Algorithm for the anticoagulated patient
• Describe the process for the reversal of anticoagulant effects for patients with life-threatening bleeding who present to the ED
• Describe the management of anticoagulated patients presenting to the ED with intracranial and intraspinal bleeding
