Patients presenting to the Emergency Department are more critically ill than at any time during our specialties existence. Limited intensive care bed availability and long boarding times require the emergency physician to be facile with managing the critically ill patient beyond their initial stabilization. The sheer amount of new medical literature has outpaced the ability of clinicians to consume and synthesize this information into their practice. In this session, the presenters will briefly review the latest critical care studies published outside EM journals that may have been missed. They will then engage the audience with a discussion of the impact these studies have on the care of critically ill and injured ED patients. Academic physicians will leave this session with new evidence to enhance their downstairs care while maximizing outcomes upstairs.

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

• Describe 5 recent critical care studies and their implications for academic EM physicians.
• Improve institutional critical care practice through increased awareness of the most up to date literature.
• Enhance EM trainee education by expanding critical care knowledge base and the implications for practice in the ED.
