The decision of when to start a family is a very personal choice and based on many factors. With a career in emergency medicine, additional factors such as shift work need to be considered. While there is not one correct answer, there are certain factors that should be considered based on various circumstances. In this session, we will briefly review the existing literature on family planning during training, followed by an expert panel of physicians who are willing to share their experiences. Some unique issues related to infertility, adoption, LGBT, divorce, being a single parent, and having a family before and after residency training will be discussed. This will be followed by breakout sessions for participants to ask specific questions in smaller groups. Each group will identify 2-3 key points that are related to specific challenges and potential solutions for family planning with a career in medicine. The group will reconvene to summarize the key points identified in each breakout session.
