There are many elements that go into running an emergency medicine (EM) clerkship — from training residents and faculty, to providing feedback, to advising students on away rotations and applications. Clerkship directors must also answer to many masters: the medical school, the department, students as learners, and students as advisees. As part of their role, clerkship directors are also responsible for accreditation standards, especially during visits from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). This workshop will discuss several of the factors that go into running a successful clerkship and how to navigate some of the pitfalls.

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

• Demonstrate different ways to facilitating rater training
• Utilize interactive instructional strategies
• Plan for the non-EM rotator
• Discuss advising for “at risk” applicants, prepare students for the Standardized Video Interview, and help students develop learning plans
• Identify ways to create a positive learning environment and address student mistreatment
• Describe remediation strategies
• Discuss how the LCME impacts a clerkship and how you can contribute to a successful accreditation
• Write high quality narrative comments for the SLOE (standardized letter of evaluation) and discuss the use of one-third in ranking applicants
