Ajay Manhapra practiced hospital medicine for over a decade and then made a career change to addiction medicine. He completed a 2-year VA Interprofessional fellowship in addiction medicine at the Department of Psychiatry, Yale School of Medicine/ VA West Haven Health System. After fellowship training, he established a novel clinic for managing patients with complex severe disabling chronic pain and multiple comorbidities including addiction. His research is focused on the interface between addiction, medical illness, and psychiatric disorders. His clinical work is focused on developing models of care for severe disabling chronic pain, especially among those with addictive disorders. At Hampton VA Medical Center, he is developing and implementing an integrative comprehensive pharmaco-behavioral model for management of severe disabling chronic pain. He is also involved in a health system effort to establish a system-wide program for prevention and management of severe disabling chronic pain. He has delivered multiple invited lectures on topics related to pain and addiction. He also has published two influential conceptual narratives regarding this topic.
