Sarah J. Shoemaker-Hunt, PhD, PharmD, a Principal Associate with Abt Associates, is a pharmacist and health services and implementation researcher who conducts research and provides technical assistance on opioid prescribing and management, opioid misuse and abuse, medication management and safety, primary care transformation, and quality improvement. Dr. Shoemaker-Hunt currently serves as Co-PI on a trio of CDC-funded projects to implement the CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain via quality improvement (QI) and measures, coordinated care, and clinical decision support. Additionally, she led development of 16 QI measures aligned to the CDC guideline. These tools for clinicians and health care systems were recently-released by the CDC as the Quality Improvement and Care Coordination: Implementing the CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain. Dr. Shoemaker-Hunt is also leading the CDC Opioid QI Collaborative of healthcare systems implementing the guideline and measuring their progress using the QI measures. This Collaborative is being expanded to additional systems from across the country, but is presently in nearly 100 practices in 8 states. She also leads an AHRQ study to implement and evaluate the Six Building Blocks for Opioid Management (www.improvingopioidcare.org) in dozens of practices across the country. Dr. Shoemaker-Hunt has presented extensively on her opioid research and work at several national conferences, including the AcademyHealth, National Rx Drug Abuse and Heroin Summit, APHA, and the D&I Conference. Dr. Shoemaker –Hunt received her pharmacy doctorate from Creighton University and her doctor of philosophy from the University of Minnesota.
