Positive school climate has been demonstrated to reduce student drug use and other risky behaviors. But how does one go about implementing a positive school climate? Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based framework with demonstrated results for enhancing school climate and is currently being implemented in over 26,000 K-12 schools in the United States. This session will present a summary of the research regarding school climate and its relation to student substance use and PBIS as a prevention framework. Then, presenters will describe implementation of a school-wide prevention framework in a way that can be replicated while adapted for contextual fit. Finally, the quantitative results of Nevada’s School Climate Transformation Project will be disseminated, with data reflecting an increase in positive school climate and decreases in student problem behaviors.
This session is accredited for the following accreditation types: CME, CNE, CPE, APA, AAFP, AAHCPAD*, NAADAC*, ASWB*
