Manufacturing and Bioprocessing
2019 PharmSci 360
Historically the pharmaceutical industry has used batch manufacturing to make drug products. However, there is a growing interest in using continuous manufacturing (CM) to gain benefits like lower production costs/time and improved product quality control.
Practitioners of CM are keenly aware of the need for free-flowing, non-segregating materials in their processes, but may be less aware of the key material attributes which contribute to the desired properties. In addition, the introduction of co-processed excipients and novel excipient grades to the industry has enabled use of some processing technologies in CM which were previously used only in batch production.
