Small molecules in the brain represent key transmitters of signals. Harnessing the power of mass spectrometry enables the characterization of small molecules present in the brain. Connecting mass spectrometry to matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) provides the ability to localize regional changes in the brain connected to a disease or treatment. Additionally, using direct analysis techniques such as liquid micro junction surface analysis can help to characterize transient signals produced by electrical stimuli. This talk will describe modern mass spectrometry techniques that characterize small molecules changes in the brain and provide insight into the future use of the technology.
