The emerge of continuous granulation has presented us with opportunities to introduce innovative technologies addressing classical issues related to the process. Oversaturation of the powder bed during wetting is costly to the granulation process, especially on the demands of downstream milling and drying steps that must compensate for inadequacies in the process itself. Twin screw granulation, the favored example of continuous granulation, has many process advantages related to its confined operating space but oversaturation is a constant problem in this space because aerosolizing the liquid feed is impossible. This session will introduce a newly developed wetting technology for twin screw granulation that uses an aqueous foam to uniformly disperse the binding liquid across all particles, in much the same manner as dyes are applied to textiles. Attendees will learn how this technology works inside the extruder, gain an understanding of granulation performance with this adapted technology and hear about examples such as certain hydrophobic formulations where it is the best solution to guaranteeing uniform API content in tablets.
