The use of drug clearance as the link between drug concentration and elimination rate provides a way to describe both renal excretion and drug metabolism. During gestation and for around 2 years after birth both renal and organ function undergo a combined process of growth and maturation. At the time of birth there are major changes affecting organ function which also affect drug clearance processes. Empirical functions describing maturation and post natal changes in clearance indicate that post-natal changes are transient and relatively small in relation to the overall changes due to maturation.
