Communication with clients can break down quickly when a mispronunciation leads to a misunderstanding. Collaborations become unnecessarily complicated when the misuse of a word confuses the intended message. Most international scientists have a good command of spoken English, but it may not be good enough. IMPRINT (Immigrant Professional Integration) surveyed over 4,000 college-educated immigrants in six major US cities, and found that immigrants who speak English “very well” are 3 times more likely to attain professional success than those who speak English “well”. The difference is in the mastery of the technical details of the language. In this engaging and interactive session, we will discuss how to master some of the unique characteristics of American English that will take your speaking skills to the next level. We will discuss how to produce the correct resonance for American English, how to correct some commonly mispronounced sounds, and how to use the proper intonation to convey your intended message. You will leave with increased confidence that future interactions with clients and collaborators will be much more productive.
