Working With Academic Advisors to Customize Advising for International Students

Learn strategies to help academic advisors combine their expertise with a holistic understanding of the international student experience. We will discuss a framework we offer academic advisors to assist them develop appropriate goals for each advising session and how to assess student learning.

Roberto Arruda is an educator committed to helping international students have a successful higher education experience in the U.S. Roberto has taught English as a second language, worked with international teaching assistants, and provided immigration, academic, and intercultural support to international students.

Believing that it takes the whole campus to provide a great educational experience, Roberto has developed programs and resources for faculty and staff to be better work with students coming from different cultures.

Roberto is currently working on his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration and his research interests are intercultural communication, and internationalization of higher education institutions.

Denee Janda

Assistant Director of Academic Coaching & International Coaching Specialist
University of Colorado Boulder

Denee Janda is the Assistant Director of Academic Coaching and International Student Specialist in the University Exploration and Advising Center at CU Boulder. Denée grew up in eastern Nebraska and received a B.A. in Communication Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She continued her study of communication while pursuing an M.A. in Communication and a Graduate Certificate in Mediation and Conflict Resolution at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Denée taught collegiate Communication/Speech classes for eight years in Minnesota and Nebraska before transitioning to academic advising. She now leads an Academic Coaching program to foster academic skills among students, including international students.
