Unraveling Culture: The Educator's Role in Aiding Students' Cultural Navigation

Using humor, visuals, and audience perspectives, we will try to imagine the international student experience in U.S.culture and discuss ways to help students understand confusing aspects of that culture. International educators can learn to reframe communication and thinking to enhance the international student experience.

Nancy S. Hyde

Nancy S. Hyde has worked in higher education for over 25 years. Nancy was a Fulbright International Education Administrator Seminar participant to South Korea in 2017. She works at Utah State University's Office of Global Engagement as a DSO, an international admissions advisor, does transcript evaluation, and international transfer credit. Nancy earned an MA from the University of Northern Colorado in Educational Leadership (concentration: Higher Education Student Affairs Leadership).

Nancy enjoys learning and sharing information about culture, presenting to a variety of groups, largely in higher education. She particularly enjoys fostering cultural understanding and traveling to experience other cultures.

Sharon Lyman

ESL Graduate Instructor
Utah State University Intensive English Language Institute

Sharon Lyman is a current graduate student pursing a Master’s of Second Language Teaching at Utah State University. She teaches a reading class to international students with USU’s Intensive English Language Institute (IELI). For the last two years, she has taught beginning to advanced ESL courses to immigrants, international students, visiting scholars, and their spouses in Salt Lake City and Logan, Utah. Her Bachelor's degree is in Communication Studies.

Sharon enjoys learning and teaching languages. She loves working in intercultural settings and plans to teach ESL to refugees, immigrants, and international students, working in both academic and community settings.
