The Public Good Projects
The West Orange Healthcare District (WOHD) is using a policy, systems, and environmental change approach to create the healthiest community in the nation. WOHD partnered with the Orange County Health Department to assess the needs of west Orange County, FL using a health equity lens. In 2016, WOHD championed Healthy West Orange(HWO), a community-wide movement focused on wellbeing, centered around a grassroots network of diverse stakeholders. To prioritize work using data-driven strategies, WOHD partnered with The Public Good Projects (PGP) to analyze RWJF County Health Rankings, using innovative weighting metrics to select factors with the highest probability to improve health. PGP then created four social marketing campaigns to address: smoking cessation, binge drinking, low birthweight, and opioid misuse. PGP also utilizes cutting-edge software to monitor discourse of topics across publicly available “big data” sources.
Additionally, HWO has an active community presence, engaging partners and programs locally to strengthen and reinforce social marketing campaigns. Local programs address social determinants of health most relevant to selected RWJF health topics. In addition to using County Health Rankings to measure long-term success, WOHD utilizes rich and unique sources for observation of health outcomes, including: (1) digital metrics; (2) online evaluation surveys; (3) analysis of “big data;” and (4) healthcare patient data. The HWO movement merges innovative and non-traditional partnerships, private sector techniques and technologies, and best practices across health education, community engagement, and health communications. By forming strategic partnerships guided by data-informed strategies, WOHD supports programs that are more likely to reach at-risk audiences, offering a blueprint for community-wide change.
