Too often, United States (US) cities lack actionable data, specific to their jurisdictions, on population health status, health determinants, and health equity, as data is routinely only presented at the county-, state-, or national-level. To address this gap in city-level indicators of health and health determinants, a team at New York University School of Medicine, in partnership with the New York University Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, the National Resource Network, the International City/County Management Association, and the National League of Cities, developed the City Health Dashboard, which launched in May 2018.
The Dashboard is an online tool that provides data at the city and neighborhood level on 37 actionable measures of health outcomes, health determinants, and health equity derived from publicly available national-level datasets for all 500 US cities of populations ≥ 66,000. The site includes interactive data visualizations and resources connecting data to action, which have greatly expanded its reach in engaging public and private partners to improve the health and well-being of local communities. Cases from three cities, Flint MI, Waco TX, and Austin, TX, will be presented in this panel. These local users will demonstrate the success of this tool in bringing together health departments, community groups, policy makers, businesses, and other local stakeholders to measure, understand, and take action to address the most pressing needs around health and social determinants in their communities.
