A skilled workforce is critical to public health, and key to successful workforce development is ensuring activities reflect the competencies most important for public health jobs. The Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies), a consensus set of foundational knowledge and skills for the broad practice of public health developed by the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages), are widely used by health departments and offer a starting point for implementing workforce development initiatives that are competency-based. The Council on Linkages encourages organizations to tailor their competency selections to meet organizational and individual goals and needs; however, the path to operationalizing competencies is not always clear. Join this session to learn how the Core Competencies can help health departments better assess and meet the training and professional development needs of their workforce. Participants will practice using a tool to help identify specific Core Competencies relevant to public health jobs and prioritize Core Competencies that may be most needed to address local health department needs and requirements, and hear from Denver Public Health about how they have used a process to identify essential Core Competencies for positions within their health department, align these to their strategic goals, and strengthen important skills within their workforce. Participants will receive tools and tips that can be applied to any health department.
