Nationally both the private and public sector need to be preparing for the retirement of the baby boomer generation from the workforce. The “silver tsunami” was postponed with the last recession, but with the most recent financial recovery, many have begun their retirements. In order to be prepared and ensure that institutional knowledge is transferred to emerging leaders, succession planning is critical. Knowing what your agency’s key positions are, identifying the needed competencies and then building a pool of qualified applicants will help you prepare. The process does not have to be expensive and, as our Department has learned, it can engage both those who are more advanced in their careers and those just entering the workforce. Planning is critical and without this piece in a Department’s Workforce Development Plan, an agency may potentially be placed in a whirlwind when the “silver tsunami” hits.
