Emerging Trends in Public Health
Sharing Session - 90 Minutes
As individual, family, and community health reverberates with the impacts of an anti-immigration federal agenda and rhetoric, it is critically important for public health departments to double down to protect immigrant health and well-being.
The approaches a health department takes to address immigration stressors will vary based on their localized community context. Our goal in this session is to bring together a range of experiences and lessons learned taking this on, to discuss the nuances of the work in different contexts, and to come away with actionable next steps to advance health equity for immigrant families.
To frame the discussion, we will begin by presenting the current context of federal immigration policy with examples of emerging research on the health impacts of immigration enforcement practices. We’ll then invite staff members from local health departments to share their stories informally, with the goal of nurturing an honest discussion among those in the room.
