Suicide is a significant public health problem in the United States. As a key contributor to the nation’s declining life expectancy (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018), suicide as a public health issue requires a coordinated, comprehensive approach that engages partners from both the public and private sectors. This panel will discuss public-private partnerships as an important and influential model to reducing the nation’s rising suicide rate and will feature three examples focused on suicide prevention: (1) The National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention; (2) Washington state’s Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention; and (3) the Colorado-National Collaborative.
Panelists will describe their respective efforts, reflect on the benefits of the public-private partnership model, discuss key components of successful public-private partnerships to advance suicide prevention, and share lessons learned related to developing and maintaining strategic and effective public-private partnerships.
