Each decade since 1980, the Healthy People Initiative has established a set of science-based objectives with 10-year targets to motivate, guide, and focus action to improve the nation’s health and communicate a vision for achieving health equity. This presentation will provide an overview of Healthy People and the role that legal and policy approaches can play in shaping conditions that advance attainment of Healthy People goals. In addition to sharing information about the current iteration of Healthy People, presenters will discuss the development and status of Healthy People 2030, including new opportunities to consider legal and policy tools to support a healthier nation. A presenter from the Kansas City Health Department will share experiences using national and local targets to develop a community-wide vision to health outcomes and promoting health equity, and how they leverage law and policy and engage a broad spectrum of public and private partners to support that vision. With time set aside for a robust discussion, session attendees will be encouraged to share their experiences with the Healthy People Initiative, how they have used or could consider using legal and policy strategies to tackle pressing public health challenges and to promote health equity, as well as the kinds of tools and resources needed to help them best engage in this important work.
