Chicago residents face health inequities based on race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and neighborhood. For example, data show variations in 2014 Chicago health insurance coverage rates based on demographic characteristics. Organizations throughout Chicago are reversing health inequities. Healthy Chicago 2.0, Chicago’s four-year community health improvement plan, has an underlying goal of achieving health equity and a commitment to reducing health inequities in Chicago. This vision will be achieved when Chicago’s public health system, a multi-sector network of organizations such as health care providers, government agencies, social service providers, advocates, academic institutions, businesses, and faith-based organizations, work collectively to improve the health of the population.
Center for Asian Health Equity (CAHE), a partnership between non-profit Asian Health Coalition (AHC) and the University of Chicago, works to align programmatic priorities with Healthy Chicago 2.0. The partnership between AHC and University of Chicago combines the assets of a respected non-profit organization and world class research organization to take a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach through research, health education, community engagement, and dissemination.
Stakeholders used the National Association of County and City Health Officials Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships to develop the four year plan. CAHE is accomplishing the goals outlined in Healthy Chicago 2.0 in four specific areas out of ten action areas: (1) expanding partnerships and community engagement; (2) increasing access to healthcare and human services; (3) improving health outcomes; and (4) utilizing and maximizing data and research. This proposal calls for health departments to identify stakeholders within their regions, invite dialogue, and develop alliances to target health disparities.
