Centers for Disease Control estimates that each year 48 million people get sick from a foodborne illness, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die. Local health departments are critical to the prevention and mitigation of foodborne illness. Since its inception in 2006, the Council to Improve Foodborne Outbreak Response (CIFOR) has been working to improve methods to detect, investigate, control, and prevent foodborne disease outbreaks. CIFOR was created to develop and share guidelines, processes, and products that will facilitate effective foodborne outbreak response among all disciplines- epidemiology, environmental health, and public health laboratory.
This session will provide an overview of CIFOR tools available and how local health departments can use them to improve foodborne illness outbreak response. Attendees will also learn how the CIFOR tools have been used by local health departments to improve relationships among their experts in epidemiology, environmental health, and public health laboratories to collaboratively bolster foodborne illness outbreak response.
