Administrative law is the law of the government. Administrative law extends into nearly every aspect of modern life, and many public health practice areas are, in fact, specialized fields of administrative law. Administrative law guides the regulation of food, water, housing conditions, pharmaceuticals and chemicals, occupational safety and health, and medical practice. It directs the eligibility and disbursement decisions of public benefits programs, including Medicare, The Children’s Health Insurance Program, WIC, and Medicaid. Ultimately, state, tribal, local, and territorial health agencies are authorized to enforce public health actions, and exercise extensive powers vis-à-vis individuals and private entities. Because of the reach and intensity of these powers and the possibility of severe intrusion of the rights of individuals, it is important the public health practitioners understand the framework for and recognize administrative law principles and rules when exercising public health powers. It is through this lens that the latest set of Public Health Law Academy, courses—“the ABC’s of Administrative Law in Public Health Practice Parts 1 and 2” —have been developed. In this pre-conference session, participants will be introduced to the concepts and principles included in the Public Health Law Academy’s course offerings on administrative law, and will be offered opportunities to provide feedback on current versions of the courses. In addition to increasing participant understanding of the role of administrative law and legal procedures in the everyday practice of public health, this workshop will allow participants to provide meaningful feedback on the latest Public Health Law Academy course offerings.
