Effective debriefing requires the application of specific skills and strategies, yet existing literature offers little guidance on how debriefing expertise develops over time. An elaboration of the trajectory through which debriefing expertise evolves would help to inform educators looking to enhance their skills. In this presentation, Dr. Cheng will present a new conceptual framework for the development of debriefing expertise based on a modification of Dreyfus and Dreyfus’ model of skill development. For each of the three stages of debriefing skill development - Discovery, Growth, and Maturity - he will highlight characteristics of debriefers, requisite knowledge and key skills. Lastly, he will discuss how faculty development efforts can be tailored to educators as their progress along their journey in the acquisition of debriefing expertise.
