State the overall Goal or Outcome : The goal of this workshop would be to provide experts in mannequin based simulation the fundamentals of virtual reality so that they can start to think about ways of incorporating virtual reality into their existing simulation programs. The basics of virtual reality- language, technology, differences from mannequin based simulation- will be discussed. Issues such as cost and issues with intellectual property and navigating through contract issues will also be explored. There will be a few different commercial companies discussed which will hopefully to support an environment that is not biased toward one company.
Intended Audience : Educators interested learning more about virtual reality.
Relevance to the Conference : As simulation has gained widespread acceptance as a learning methodology, the challenge has shifted towards improving quality, increasing access and integrating simulation with systems to impact performance. As this shift has occurred, the increasing commercial availability of virtual reality headsets provides the opportunity to deliver completely immersive, interactive simulation scenarios. Using virtual reality can increase learner throughput, improve simulation accessibility and reduce the cost of delivering simulation. Many mannequin based simulation educators need to learn the basics of virtual reality and this workshop hopes to fulfill that gap. As simulation educators who have all transitioned from mannequin based simulation to virtual reality, the faculty for this workshop will guide a 90 minute interactive session on the basics of virtual reality.
