Dr. Swaminathan is the Don Merrill Rees Presidential Endowed Chair and Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Utah. He did his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Chicago and his ID fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and NCI for virology research for over 25 years. Dr. Swaminathan's research focuses on the regulation of gene expression in two viruses associated with lymphoma and other cancers: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpes virus. Dissecting the innate immune response and understanding the mechanisms that control these viruses’ replication is a major aspect of Swaminathan’s research.
Dr. Swaminathan sees patients on the immunocompromised host ID service and at the VA hospital. Dr. Swaminathan has served on numerous NIH review committees, and is currently Vice-Chair of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) panel on Prevention and Treatment of Cancer-Related Infections. He also serves on the FDA Antimicrobial Drugs Advisory Committee, as Treasurer of the International Association for Research on EBV and Associated Diseases, on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Virology and is an Associate Editor for PLOS Pathogens.
