For the last three years, the Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University has used professional coaches to elevate the leadership capacity of students across the university. While allowing coaches to tailor their engagements to the needs of their student clients, we also provide training and structure for the semester-long interactions. Structure and supervision increase our ability to measure the effectiveness of coaching college students, to experiment with new methods to maximize impact and to explore novel strategies for enhancing leadership skills. The Doerr Institute now has enough evidence to establish proof-of-concept for the use of leadership coaching during the defining decade of adult development. Our findings also point out the lack of meaningful growth in students’ identities as leaders without intentional, professional intervention. Our data and ongoing work to promote the use of evidence-based methods in leader development will help to drive demand for professional leadership coaches among top-tier colleges and universities.
