At work, too many appraisals can be transactional. Colleagues do paperwork like writing a book - a conversation is had that is often the live version or film of the book - and then someone writes it up like a review. Yet little changes. We are learning that you can use the principles of establishing the coaching agreement for any conversation, and they work well in appraisals, even when not all the conversation is pure coaching.
