Indonesia has a rich tradition of writing texts on palm leaf material. Indonesian palmleaf manuscripts differ in quality based on the respect owners/makers had/have for the text contained in the manuscript, the financial situation of the owner/commissioner of the manuscript, socio-political circumstances, the way they were preserved and used, and the purposes for which the manuscripts were made.
Especially the differences in quality between palm leaf manuscripts from Bali and adjacent Lombok is striking and begs to be explained. In the presentation the latest methods to decide on the quality of palm leaf manuscripts in relation to the reasons for their different qualities will be highlighted.
