Arts and Culture
This speech focus on the 1st generation of Korean artist in Paris represented by Lee Ungno 이응로 who studied in Japan before going to France and on the 2nd generation by Lee Bae 이배 who came directly to Paris without studying in Japan. Lee Ungno established in 1964 Paris Oriental Painting Academy with Vadim Elisseeff who was Cernuschi Museum director. In teaching calligraphy and painting, he spread the beauty of East Asia painting in Europe. Lee Bae is one one the founder of Sonamou Association (1991) which gathers 25 Korean artists and 21 artists from different countries of origin, including French.
I will analyze the works exhibited at the exhibition of Lee Ungno (1904-1989) performed at the Cernuschi Museum in 2017, and the works of Lee Bae (1956-) at Exhibition of Saint Paul de Vence in 2018. Far from their country, these artists did not lose their original culture. The essence of culture is set in the new environment and creates a new original work. These two Korean artists have already exhibited all over the world, so among their exhibitions, I chose only exhibitions performed in France. By explaining their artistic career in France, their life in Paris, their immigration course and their philosophy, I will reach their immateriality through Zen thought, the emptiness of Buddhism and Tao.
