Migration and Diasporas
Based on a number of empirical studies on nursing education and international nurse migration in Nepal, this paper will bring together current issues and debates around nursing education, workforce management and the growing opportunities for Nepali nurses in global health care market. International nurse migration is relatively a new and rapidly growing phenomenon in Nepal. Nursing has become a highly desired profession for modern women in Nepal - as well as growing job opportunity in global healthcare market for Nepali nurses, they are also highly desired candidates in marriage market. As a result, investment in nursing education and international migration is growing.
There is nursing shortage in Nepal and at the same time nurses remain unemployed. There is a huge mismatch in nurse production and distribution, (deployment and rural- urban mal-distribution), and labour exploitation in the country is rampant. International migration has been seen as the best option for Nepali nurse. Currently, the most preferred destination countries for Nepali nurses are the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand. International job opportunity for nurses has been seen as an easy route for their family relocation and settlement in affluent countries.
