This session brings together young scholars who were awarded PhD awards.
The GIS Asie organizes its PhD awards every two year, for dissertations that were submitted in French and Belgian universities over the last two years. This competition has taken place since 2017, in order to provide support and a better visibility to young scholars in the domain of the Asian studies in the French-speaking academic area. The award includes a grant that aims at funding the publication of their thesis with a scientific publishing house. For 2017-2018 more than 60 dissertations were submitted. The jury distinguished three recipients for the excellence of their scholarship, who were invited to present their work during a ceremony in Paris in January 2019 and in Leiden at ICAS in July 2019. In addition to Clémence Jullien and David Serfass who are part of this panel, the award was also given to Juliette Cleuziou for her PhD research in anthropology on Tajikistan (“Marriages, de-marriages and re-marriages : ritual, gender and kinship in contemporary Tajikistan”).
