United Front activities is an important way for Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to sway elite and public opinion. However, less attention has been paid to the nexus between United Front activities and the party-state’s military modernisation agenda. Using case studies and new Chinese-language material, this paper examines the military and security aspects of CCP’s United Front work. In particular, it examines the role played by United Front work in the acquisition of foreign military technology and expertise.
