In a time of increased awareness and inclusiveness, it is imperative that forensic nursing practice meets the needs of the LGBTQ community. This workshop will explore safe care of the LGBTQ population and discuss ways to adapt sexual assault examinations to make them gender inclusive. With a focus on care of the transgender community, we will delve into understanding the spectrum of gender. The presenter will discuss the difference between gender and sexuality and discuss ways to look at your forensic practice to increase your awareness. We will look at practical ways to incorporate education, awareness, and improve the service you already offer, so that patients from any culture may feel safer utilizing it. We will go on to discuss why clients may not access care and look at the increased risk of sexual violence in the LGBTQ population. Finally, we will explore some of the medical treatments for transgender-identified individuals who are undergoing a medically supervised transition and how that may impact your care and examination. Throughout the workshop we learn practical implications for care and suggestions from those with lived experience.
