Jamie Ferrell, MBA, BSN, RN, CA/CP-SANE, SANE-A, SANE-P, DF-IAFN
Ms. Ferrell has a Master in Business Administration with Health Care Emphasis and Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Ms. Ferrell is the Clinical Director of the Forensic Nursing Services for the Memorial Hermann Health System with 11 acute care hospitals throughout the Greater Houston Area of Houston, Texas. In her Forensic Nursing role she oversees the day to day operations and provision of comprehensive evaluations for adults and children having suffered sexual assault. She provides initial staff training, assures orientation completion, offers quarterly staff education modules, and ensures peer review of patient care and documentation.
Ms. Ferrell has vast experience in developing and presenting education and outreach programs for advocacy, law enforcement, health and judicial to reflect evidence based practice in the care and evidence preservation for the sexual assault patient that will impact health, investigation and prosecution.
Jamie has 41 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, with extensive practice in Emergency/Trauma Care. She has spent the last 33 years as a practicing Forensic Nurse/Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE); beginning in the rural Texas panhandle of Amarillo provided her firsthand knowledge of the obstacles faced by victims of sexual assault when accessing health care. Ms. Ferrell’s commitment to being a catalyst for change for sexual assault victims has resulted with being featured in SELF magazine, international consultation extending to 15 countries and nationally providing education and system analysis to 25 states. Her credits include: 1) originating task force member developing The Texas State Evidence Collection Protocol 2) established Texas State certification and standardized education for Adult and Pediatric SANE’s during her employment in the Texas Office of the Attorney General 3) founding board member of the International Association of Forensic Nurse serving for 11 years holding all officer positions including Past President 4) founding board member of the Forensic Nursing Certification Board assisting with establishment of both the SANE-A and SANE-P credential opportunities, 5) founding member of ‘The Bridge’, the first Child Advocacy Center in Texas. Key affiliations include International Association of Forensic Nurses, American Academy of Forensic Sciences, American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, Emergency Nurses Association, American Nurses Association and the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault. She has authored numerous publications on the care of the sexual assault patient and was appointed to the American College of Emergency Physician’s task force to assist in the development of the manual ‘Evaluation and Treatment of the Sexually Assaulted or Sexually Abused Patient’.
Ms. Ferrell was inducted as a Distinguished Fellow of The International Association of Forensic Nurses due to her tireless efforts nationally and humanitarian efforts internationally to improve health care for victims. Locally she was recognized with the prestigious Memorial Hermann Robert C. Hanna Award for 2012. Each year this award is given to only one nurse from the entire Memorial Hermann Hospital System of over 20,000 employees; it recognized her outstanding performance in improving quality care and outcomes for patients having suffered victimization. She was also the recipient of the 1997 Medical Excellence Award from the National Coalition Against Sexual Assault and the 1998 Virginia A. Lynch Pioneer Award from the International Association of Forensic Nurses.
