Dr. Safian founded the Center for Innovation and Research in Cardiovascular Diseases (CIRC) at Beaumont Health, and is the Lucia Zurkowski Endowed Chair for CIRC. He is Professor of Medicine at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship. Dr. Safian is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Interventional Cardiology, Vascular Medicine, Endovascular Medicine, and Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography.
Dr. Safian’s interests are in teaching and education; clinical research in structural, valvular, and vascular diseases; and invasive/non-invasive imaging for plaque characterization; and coronary physiology. Dr. Safian is involved in community awareness and philanthropic support for children with Crohn’s disease. He founded the Michigan Youth Life-sciences Program, providing mentorship in life-sciences for inner-city high school students.
Dr. Safian received BS in Chemistry and MD from the University of Florida. He completed residency programs in Internal Medicine at the University of California-San Diego, and in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Miami. He completed fellowship programs in Cardiology and in Interventional Cardiology at Beth Israel Hospital-Harvard Medical School, and in Vascular Medicine at Duke University.
Dr. Safian’s entire career has been in academic medicine, first as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard and Associate Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Beth Israel Hospital. After moving to Beaumont, Dr. Safian was the Director of Interventional Cardiology and the Director of Vascular Medicine. Dr. Safian has published extensively, including books and original articles in the fields of interventional cardiology and endovascular medicine. He has completed comparative studies of computed tomography-derived fractional flow reserve (FFRct) and invasive fractional flow reserve, and PCI planning with FFRct. He serves on numerous committees in various professional societies and on the steering committees of several research trials. He has been the recipient of several awards for teaching and clinical research.
