Dr. Michael Miloro is Professor and Head, and Program Director of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, and he is also Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He received his undergraduate education at the University of Rochester and obtained a B.S. in Neurobiological Sciences where his interest in neural mechanisms of injury and repair began in 1980. He completed his dental school at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts, and medical school and postgraduate residency training in General Surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania and at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1994. Dr. Miloro has held academic positions at The Ohio State University, University of Maryland at Baltimore, and University of Nebraska. Dr. Miloro is a Diplomate and past-Examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a Faculty Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, a Fellow of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.).
Dr. Miloro is the 2012 recipient of the prestigious Arnold K. Maislen Memorial Award presented by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at New York University for his major contributions to the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He also received the 2017 Distinguished Service Award from the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the 2019 SECIB Premio Internacional from the Spanish Society of Cirugia Bucal for his international contributions to the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Miloro is dedicated to student and resident surgeon education and training. Dr. Miloro has major clinical and research interests in nerve injury and regeneration for the past 25 years, TMJ disease, and orthognathic surgery. He has an impressive international reputation, and he has lectured nationally and internationally, has published extensively in the medical and dental literature with over 100 peer-reviewed publications, and he has written numerous textbook chapters. Dr. Miloro currently serves as the Section Editor of the section of Craniomaxillofacial Deformities/Sleep Disorders/Cosmetic Surgery of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Miloro is Editor of three major textbooks in the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including Peterson's Principles of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Management of Complications in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Trigeminal Nerve Injuries, the only textbook devoted to nerve injuries of the trigeminal nerves.
