Approximately 70% of Americans are overweight or obese. The high prevalence of excess weight and obesity in the United States, and related health risks, make the role of the primary care physician an important one. Studies show that talking with patients about weight loss may help promote behavior change. Lifestyle change and weight loss can be extremely difficult, so it is important to provide encouragement and support for ongoing behavioral modification. This session will cover ways physicians can encourage patients to change their lifestyles, focus on the importance of counseling to achieve weight loss goals, and, ultimately, attain improved health.
