Women's Mental Health
Reproductive hormones play an important role in mood, affect and behavior regulation. We have long known that women are more vulnerable to affective disorders. Also, some women are more susceptible to reproductive cycle related affective disorders such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), postpartum depression (PPD) and perimenopausal depression.
CL Psychiatrists are often called to assess women for mood and anxiety symptoms. In addition to the medical / surgical /obstetric reason for hospital admission, a woman’s mental health symptoms may very well be impacted by her reproductive hormonal milieu. She may be premenstrual / pregnant / postpartum/ peri or postmenopausal/ on hormonal birth control or undergoing hormonal infertility treatment.
This symposium aims to help CL psychiatrists recognize the impact of a women’s hormonal milieau on her symptoms and thereby, develop an informed treatment plan
