Express Learning Breakout
This presentation will demonstrate the importance of collecting data about CVAD insertion and removal as well as any complications during the dwell in order to improve CVAD complications and patient outcomes. To date, our CVAD Registry contains over 750 patients diagnosed with cancer with over 1,200 CVADs. Only 45% of patients have their CVADs removed due to completed therapy. The top 5 complications at removal are suspected CVAD-related infection, accidental dislodgement, CVAD-related thrombosis, occlusion and local infection. With the knowledge of these complication, we developed a series of in-services focusing on hand hygiene, aseptic non-touch technique, site inspection, CVAD maintenance and documentation. We have showed an improvement in practice by using the date held in the CVAD Registry as well as independently collected data from Infection Monitoring and Prevention Service.
