Power Hour Breakout
Accidental Central Line dislodgement in hospitalized patients occurs frequently. The recent clinical literature that does exist cites PICC line dislodgement rates from 5.6%-12%, and documents the cost to insert central lines to be between $300-$600 depending on the type of line and whether the procedure was performed at the bedside or in an interventional radiology unit. Dislodgements increase costs, delay therapies, and put patients at increased risk. While researchers have a basic understanding of the frequency and occurrence rates of Central Line dislodgements, very little research exists on the true impact of Central Line dislodgement on resource utilization, and nurse workflow. Investigating more closely the occurrence and consequences of Central Line dislodgements will provide a better understanding of the impact and provide insight into modalities that might prevent Central Line complications in the future. A Vascular Access Team ww used a survey to document PICC/CVC dislodgements immediately after they occurred, followed by a retrospective review of a minimum of 30 consecutive PICC/CVC dislodgements.
